Online dating safety: 10 rules before you meet

Ten practical rules for meeting someone from a dating app safely: chatting, the first date, personal details and reporting.

Meeting people online is one of the easiest ways to bring someone new into your life. Most experiences are good ones, but a few simple habits keep you safe and let you relax. Here are ten rules to keep in mind before and during a first meeting.

While you’re chatting

1. Keep the chat in the app

Stick to messaging in the app at first. Don’t rush to share your phone number, social accounts or email. If you stay in the app, it’s also easy to report and block someone if something goes wrong.

2. Protect your personal details

Your home address, the exact name of your workplace, your daily routine and your financial details aren’t first-chat topics. Watch for details in your photos that give away where you live.

3. Be wary of anyone who asks for money

However convincing the story, don’t send money, gift cards or crypto to someone you haven’t met. Asking for money is the most common sign of a scam. If it happens, report the person right away.

4. Trust your instincts

If stories don’t add up, if someone keeps avoiding a video call or pressures you, take it as a sign. If something feels off, you’re free to end the conversation.

5. Video chat before you meet

A short video call is the easiest way to check that someone is who their profile says. It also tells you whether there’s a spark before you meet in person.

On the first date

6. Pick a busy, public place

Choose places with people around for a first date: a café, a restaurant or a busy park. Homes and quiet, isolated spots aren’t right for a first meeting.

7. Tell someone

Tell a friend or family member who you’re meeting, where and when. If you can, share your location and say you’ll text when you’re home.

8. Arrange your own transport

Get there and back on your own, so you can leave whenever you want. Make sure your phone is charged.

9. Stay in control

Keep your drink in sight, and don’t feel you have to do anything you’re not comfortable with. Ending a date early is completely fine. In an emergency, call your local emergency number (112 in Turkey and the EU).

After the date

10. Report and block

If someone harassed you, made you uncomfortable or acted suspiciously, don’t keep it to yourself. On Solvemate you can report or block anyone from their profile or your chat. They won’t know you reported them, and our team reviews every report.
